As settlement of the Lowcountry during colonial times was based upon geographic regions known as parishes, this book is the history of St. John's Parish which is comprised of present day Kiawah, Seabrook, Edisto, John's and Wadmalaw Islands.
This narrative is a composite of the settlement and incorporation of the parish, the colonial period, the plantation life, and aftermath of Reconstruction to the Twentieth Century. Economic and cultural life are addressed, particularly the prosperity and devastation of the Civil War era as is African-American history and culture. Included is an appendix with genealogies of island families, descriptions of plantations, records of ownership and references to diaries, memories, and letters.
Families included are: Boone, Cole, Davis, Freer, Gibbes, Grimball, Hext, Jenkins, Jones-Simmons, Ladson, LaRoche, Legare, Mathews, Roper, Sams, Seabrook, Stanyarne, Waight, Walpole, and Woodward.
